What is Perennial ryegrass?

Perennial ryegrass seed is one of the world’s most widely used sports turf seeds for lawns and professional turf.

Three key reasons for this are:

• Perennial ryegrass has a great dark green colour.
• It germinates in 3 to 10 days.
• It has a higher shade tolerance than many other grass types.

Perennial ryegrass sports turf seed grows into a fine-leaved bunch-type turf grass. It has a strong root system, responds quickly to fertiliser and recovers quickly from wear.

It is a cool season (C3) grass that:

• Adapts to different soil types.
• Grows in full sun, and tolerates some shade.
• You can mow it down to as low as 5 mm.

Intense perennial ryegrass has a high endophyte content. This means it is tolerant of stress like drought, and has a greater ability to resist insect attack.

Slugger 3GL Turf Seed.

Slugger 3GL ryegrass is the No.1 perennial ryegrass seed in the 2022 NTEP trials. It has great colour, wear tolerance and disease resistance.

Tall Fescue Turf Seed.

Spyder 2LS (Code number ZRC-1) is a 2nd generation tall fescue cultivar. It has excellent NTEP scores across all test locations. As premier turf and lawn seed suppliers we just love this grass.

Couch Turf Seed.

Couch grass is a warm-season grass that:

• Thrives in full sun and in well drained soils.
• Has a high tolerance of heat, drought, wear and salt.
• Needs high maintenance and nutrient inputs.
• Is a perennial. This means it doesn’t you don’t need to re-seed.
• Grows best in the late Spring, and in the hot Summer months.
• Stays green all year round if there aren’t any frosts. However, in many areas it goes dormant and brown over the Winter.
• To maintain turf appearance in the cooler months, it is often over-seeded with ryegrass to give better Winter colour.

Couch is a C4 grass. It spreads by below-ground stems called rhizomes, and by above-ground stems called stolons. Due to its aggressive growth, Couch grass can be a challenge to manage. However, it does have exceptional wear tolerance and recovery.

It recovers from damage far quicker than most other grasses. As a result, it is the most common grass for sports grounds, and golf course tees and fairways.

Unlike some warm-season grasses, couch grass grows both vegetatively and from seed. However, many common Couch varieties in Australia are only available vegetatively and not as seed.
